Australian Amp Company MI Amplification (the same company as MI Effects) are known for their high gain heads such as the mighty Megalith Beta and the roaring 2 Channel Iron Duke but at Winter NAMM 2013 for the very first time MI Amplification are debuting four new Combo amps pictured above: The Duchess, Crystal Lattice, Apache and Aquarius.
The Duchess (controls pictured below) is a combo version of their Iron Duke, a 45 Watt EL34 powered amp, a 2 channel design: Vintage & Modern. The Vintage channel will go from clean to crunch while the Modern Overdrive channel has plenty of gain and EQ options to help create your perfect tone.
The Crystal Lattice is MI’s take on a certain Dumble design, except the 50 Watt Crystal Lattice has 2 channels with independent boost controls and each channel and respective boost mode has a volume control and allows for the four EQ switches (BRIGHT, MID, DEEP and EQ) to be intelligently shifted for each of the four modes.
The Apache is an EL84 powered 30 Watt Combo based on classic British 60’s tones. Each channel has two spring-reverb controls (Level and Tone) and an independent Cut control for a variety of tones from 60’s surf to rock crunch.
Finally the Aquarius is a 6V6 based 30 Watter with 3 modes: Classic Clean, Fat Boost and Tone Stack Bypass. This amp has some clever stuff under the hood which enables 3 Power Amp modes and 2 Phase inverter modes, can’t wait to hear how these affect the tone.
Michael Ibrahim, founder of MI Amplification, is somewhat of an electronics genius so no matter what these amp designs are based on there will always be some cool modifications to make them stand out from the crowd. I spoke to Michael in my first ever Guitar Noize podcast where he hinted about these combos which you can check out here – http://www.guitarnoize.com/the-guitar-noize-podcast-episode-1-mi-audios-michael-ibrahim/. I will post more info as soon as I can.
