I’ve got to say I really don’t understand someone wanting a guitar that looks and feels like an old guitar, I used to think they were kind of cool but at the end of the day if I buy a new guitar I want it to be totally pristine and not a single blemish. I do understand however that a lot of people do like relic finish guitars especially artists wishing to recreate their original 50’s or 60’s strats and teles that are just too valuable to continue to take on the road. What is interesting about the new Custom Shop Michael Landau signature 1963 relic Stratocaster is that he is now using Fender pickups. Suhr have been producing a single coil pickup originally called the FL (Fletcher-Landau, Kirk Fletcher and Michael Landau) which were later renamed to ML pickups when Fletcher stopped using them so it seems they no may have to undergo yet another name change unless Landau is going to continue to use the pickup in his other guitars. Here is the full press release from Fender about the Fender Custom Shop Michael Landau Signature 1963 Relic Stratocaster.

Michael Landau’s has been privileged to play on hundreds of recordings dating back to the early 1980s. Playing with artists like Joni Mitchell, Seal, Michael Jackson, James Taylor, B.B. King, Pink Floyd and Miles Davis, he was able to create quite a name for himself. Michael has also fronted several bands, including the Raging Honkies, Burning Water and, more recently, Renegade Creation with Robben Ford. With his own group, he continues to raise the bar in electric jazz, instrumental and rock guitar.
