I was lucky enough to be sent some Ernie Ball M-Steel Super Slinky strings a few weeks ago to test before the official release at Winter NAMM 2014. I strung up my Suhr S4 with this set of 9′s (M-Steel Super Slinky) to test them out and as I was recording a few tracks decided to use this guitar on all of the tracks so you could hear the strings in action. The above soundcloud example has a few rock style examples and one funky track. I am already a fan of the Cobalt strings that Ernie Ball released and read that the wound strings are “comprised of a patented Super Cobalt alloy wrapped around a Maraging steel hex core wire”. Maraging Steel is apparently a superalloy used in high stress applications for the aerospace and defense industries so you know these aren’t going to break easily.
M-Steel plain strings are comprised of a specially tempered steel for maximum fatigue resistance. A patented winding of steel around the ball end of the plain strings reduces slippage, breakage and stays in tune better than conventional plain strings.
The loudest, most expressive strings ever created. Provides increased output, frequency response, and strength.
What I really liked about the Cobalt strings when I tested them was that they had a sort of spongey feel but still great tone, these strings feel a little more solid like regular nickel wound strings but despite being the loudest strings ever created as Ernie Ball say they allow you to hear the character of your guitar. In my above examples I tried to show this with some medium gain settings so despite using a humbucker you can really hear that crunchy tone coming through without being all compressed and dampened. In places it almost sounds like I’m using single coil pickups, I think this is due to the increased frequency response and clarity of the M-Steel strings. I’d be interested to hear other people’s thoughts, have you tried them yet? Do you agree with my findings?
