David Mead says that just doing five two minute exercises a day will help sharpen your skills as a guitarist, well this brilliant app for iOS has 60 exercises in five different categories: Warm-Ups, Co-ordination, Ear Training, Stamina and Rhythm. The cool thing is you can either choose exercises from the Library so you can mix it up or you can use the Practise mode which allows you to pick one exercise from each category and shows a 2 minute timer, tab (with picking directions) and also plays the notes for you to hear how it should sound and also a metronome. To begin with the exercises are set at 60bpm but you can easily adjust the tempo for each exercise by clicking on the settings button, which also allows you to switch off the tab play and metronome tick should you wish. Each exercise also has an explanation below the tab too. What I love about this app is that it is very easy to just ignore practice and try and jump into a song cold and then get frustrated, but by using the practice mode you give yourself a 10 minute warm up working on different areas of your technique and you can choose a different exercise from each category each time and increase the tempo as you improve.
This is a fun yet useful app that is a bargain at $2.99 – http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/david-mead-guitar-gym/id566521979?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D2&affId=1503186
